Name: Dirk "Bro" Strider {reincarnation name: Richard Brooke Stroude}
Canon and medium: Homestuck, webcomic
Age: 33
Preincarnation Species: Human
Preincarnation Appearance: This sweet mofo. Though canon skin/hair colour is never given in-comic, I play him as blond caucasian.
Any differences: Eyes changed from obnoxiously bright orange to light hazel with a clear amber ring around the iris.
Starting Location: Locke City, NJ, USA
Preincarnated History: Most relevant information can be found here.
Guardian of Dave Strider and Beta Universe incarnation of Dirk Strider, paradox clone of himself and Dave's genetic father, Bro was waiting for Dave with a pair of awesome ironic shades when he fell to Earth (destroying his favourite music store and buttkilling a pony) and raised the infant to his thirteenth year.
In that time he trained Dave to fight (or tried to), being the only Guardian to blatantly attack his charge but clearly having a motive in doing so. However, despite his peculiar behaviour and constant pushing of Dave it was always clear that the boy cared about his older brother with his frequent attempts to emulate him and his open admiration of (most of) his strange habits and talents.
When the game of SBurb begins, Bro helps Dave with his entry into the Medium via buying him time by cutting the meteor heading towards him in half with his sword, before being taken into the Medium along with him where he is next seen battling underlings and later Jack Noir himself. Fighting Jack on the Beat Mesa he plunges his sword into it, later noted as a possible attempt to initiate the Scratch and escapes through Dave's second gate to reach John’s house and retrieve the rocketboard, leaving his sword behind.
Jack pursues him after retrieving his sword and they fight again in the Land of Wind and Shade, John's planet, where Jade’s entry into the Medium and prototyping of Becquerel (Jade's Guardian and First Guardian of Earth, a counterpoint to Doc Scratch) gives Jack tremendous power and allows him to defeat Bro with ease despite the additions of Li'l Cal and Davesprite into the battle. Bro is impaled against the ground with his own sword, showing that Jack stabbed him after he was already knocked to the floor.
Dave later finds his body but leaves the sword where it is, stating that it felt weird to try and remove it.
Reincarnated History: Born on December fourth, 19--, Richard grew up constantly in the shadow of his older sister, Emmalyn. The golden child of the family, he was expected to live up to the standards set by her and, in the way that most children will do when they hit the rebellious teenage phase of their life, he did everything he could to fight against it. However, rather than grow out of it or realise that fighting his parents was doing nothing to help him, his behaviour only became worse and by the time he reached his mid-teens he was regularly smoking, drinking, stealing and skipping classes more than he attended them. A bright young man, he wasted his intelligence on weaving complicated lies to getting away with everything he could.
He was expelled from school aged fourteen and resisted every attempt to place him in another. At age sixteen, his parents finally met the end of their wits and kicked him out. It was never that they didn't love him or care about his welfare, but they were hoping that the realisation of just how bad his life could be would scare him straight. Instead, he disappeared off the map entirely, finally turning up in Texas, still homeless, years later. He made his money through busking and occasional drug dealing, lived in shelters and hostels and coasted through his twenties in a haze that to this day he still only recalls a bare few details from.
His clearest recollection from that time is, in fact, the one moment that could have ended things for him entirely. After a few dry weeks he was back to sleeping on the streets in Houston, though he was more prone to wandering through the night and catching a few hours during the day time. In the early hours of the morning while taking an ill-advised shortcut through a back-alley he was attacked for what little money he was carrying, stabbed and left for dead. Through a mix of staggering, stumbling and eventually crawling on his hands and knees he made it to a 24 hour convenience store, leaving a trail of blood over the floor before he pulled himself against the counter, muttered ‘you got a band-aid, I've been stabbed’ and fainted.
The hospital patched him up to be sure that he wasn't going to expire on the doorstep and promptly told him to leave. Shaken down to the core by the experience and the thought that whatever luck had been keeping him alive until that point had finally run out, it was then that he was hit with the epiphany that his parents had tried to urge him to over ten years previously. Life could be so much worse and only he had the ability to make the most of the years he was given. It was time to sit down and think seriously about what he could do to make things right and it was three years later, armed with his high school equivalency certificate and a published account of his ‘inspirational story’ (a phrase he would often scoff at, but if it let people sleep easier at night then who cared) in which he hadn't uttered a single harsh word against his family that he knocked on his parent's door and told them they were right.
Writing a book, in all honesty, wasn't something that he would have thought to set his mind had one of teachers on the adult education course he enrolled in not taken a particular interest in his story. While he was at first suspicious of her motives he soon found her curiosity to be genuine and little by little told her more of how he ended up where he was then. It was through her urging that he used the time he wasn't studying or working to write, finding that, with a little encouragement, he had a natural talent with words. It was a year in the making followed no small amount of perseverance and pushing to get it published and Richard was more than surprised by the near-instant popularity it gained in certain circles.
The rift he'd caused between himself and his family wasn't going to be an easy thing to fix, but he moved from Texas up to Locke City to be nearer to them, even if some of them (mainly his sister) wanted nothing to do with him. Despite the disapproval of his sister he grew close to his nephew, Dirk, who takes after him in more ways than he could have thought possible given their lifelong estrangement. At the moment he’s living on the royalties from what became a reasonably popular book, the occasional payment that schools or youth groups give him for talks and workshops, as well as the income from several small internet projects (all totally legal!).
First Echo: On picking up a katana in an antiques store, his first echo was the muscle memory to use the weapon. He's yet to fully realise the extent of the skill.
Preincarnation Personality: Bro is a mysterious character, obviously anime themed and the most sugoi motherfucker to ever grace the face of the planet. At least, that's what he'd have you believe. He is a man with a peculiar sense of humour, as well as being perverted in all kinds of odd ways, tying in his obsession with puppets to said perversion. His apartment, which he shares with his young charge Dave Strider, is covered in surveillance equipment which has presumably been placed to capture the situations that his large number of sexually themed puppets will mysteriously be found in. While his obsession is quite clear - if the number of the things in the apartment is anything to go by - his prize puppet is one Lil Cal, who is unnerving in his own right and often used by Bro in battles to really ruin his opponent.
That said, when he wants to bring the pain, Bro's favoured weapon is a blade - a katana, to be precise. This, he can wield with deadly expertise, but it must be noted that despite his obvious ability to slam Dave to the Furthest Ring while strifing with him, he never really hurts him. Bro has been noted by Davesprite to be incredibly difficult to keep track of. This, coming from a sprite who ought to know everything there is to know about the game, is perhaps an indicator of just how powerful the older Strider is. A power which even he himself may not be fully aware of. When he fights Jack Noir on the Beat Mesa, they seem almost evenly matched.
A large part of Bro’s personality is his devotion to Dave. From the moment he found the infant in the ruins of his favourite music store, he has been raising and preparing the boy for a future that he knew would not include him. He will do anything to ensure that Dave succeeds, even if it means being hard on him, and maybe not showing paternal feelings (had any been present) like he may have been able to had he not known how important his little brother would be. Despite everything he did – cutting the meteor in half, fighting Jack Noir, even dying for him – Bro will always feel as if he didn't do as much as he could have done for Dave. There will always be a faint guilt that he couldn't go further into the Medium with him, or help him more than he did, even if the Guardians were never supposed to do anything more than help the kids enter the game.
As Bro is a background character with no dialogue, some of his personality must be extrapolated from the things Dave says about him, and Dave’s own personality traits, as well as Dirk’s (to some extent).
Bro is an inherently messy individual. This isn't because he’s lazy – nothing of the sort – but rather he has more important things to be doing than picking up after himself. This is shown well enough in the state of the apartment as Dave moves through it. He’s a very flippant person with an esoteric sense of humour, deflecting personal or probing questions with irony or sarcasm and you can never really be sure if he’s being serious about something in normal conversation. However, if there ever comes a point where he is truly 100% sincere, it’s immediately obvious. This means that he comes off as rude, even deliberately insolent, when in fact he treats everyone with the same level of indiscriminate bluntness and simply doesn't give a shit unless he has reason to.
He is fairly intelligent, but being more boastful of his achievements through actions rather than words, this is something that can be easily overlooked. He isn't one given to philosophical conversation, though he’s certainly capable of it.
Being rather easygoing, at least from an outsider’s perspective, Bro is almost constantly on alert and ready for anything that the world might throw at him. It’s difficult for someone like him to relax. If his body isn't moving then his mind will be, and in a way his odd humour is a way to combat this. He’s able to be very mature when the situation calls for it… he just chooses not to be, more often than not. He is also a doggedly perseverant man, and the thought of stopping – especially when it’s something that involves Dave – even when the odds are hopelessly stacked against him isn't something that enters his mind.
With all of that in mind, while Bro is definitely badass, he’s also a bit of a dork. There is a tendency for him to believe that he is better at certain things than he really is, and bad at some things that he’s actually good at (for instance, raising Dave). If Bro cares about something, he gives his all for it. No half measures for this Strider.
Any differences: Lacking the driving force that was Dave’s arrival into his life, Richard never had to put his life to one side to look out for someone else’s. He doesn't have the same level of dogged determination as his preincarnate self and backs down far more easily from fights that he knows he can’t win. Also, given that he had to work damn hard for everything he has, Richard is quite houseproud, keeping his living space reasonably tidy where the Striders never seemed to care much for mess.
He’s also lacking the rad ninja skills possessed by Bro Strider and while he can drop a decent beat (he had to have some skill as a busker) he’s not going to win any prizes with it. Unlike Bro his literary talent lies in prose, not rap.
A major thing lacking in Richard’s personality in comparison to Bro’s is the penchant for puppetry and apparent peculiar sexual tastes. While not what you would call ‘vanilla’ even Richard would raise an eyebrow at the kinds of blogs that Bro Strider was purported to run.
Abilities: Previously mentioned rad ninja skills, including the ability to flashstep (using bursts of speed to move faster than the eye can track, making it appear as if he is teleporting), talent with a katana that would put Rurouni Kenshin to shame and a level of strength and stamina that certainly exceeds that of a normal human being.
Like many Homestuck characters, Bro also possesses a sylladex.
Presumably, he can also sew. That's an ability, right?

Anyone who's still managing to be bored with everything floating up shit creek without a paddle lately needs to start paying more attention to the local wildlife. You know, if the gigantic snake and general bedlam in the streets just wasn't enough for you.
I just spent hour and a half leading a praying mantis around my living room with a fucking laser pointer and I feel cheated by life that I went all this time without knowing this could be a thing.
I've had this crazy bug doing acrobatics all over the walls without even needing to pay for the show. Who needs a cat, I'm keeping this adorable little motherfucker as a pet. With that in mind, I'm going to need some LEGO. Yeah, that's relevant.
Any Questions? Richard's relationship with Dirk has been cleared with the player :)
